Rare or interesting sightings.

September 2005. Short-toed Eagle. Sitting on an electrical pole just down the donkey track from Casa Rosa. Spotted by Neil Barker.

October 15th 2005. Little Bittern, Stone-Curlew, White-winged Black Tern and Glossy Ibis. All see on the coast near Castro Marim and Quinta do Lago by David Hammocks and Miguel  de Sousa

October 27th 2005. Pair of Honey Buzzards over Casa Rosa. Heard then see by David Hammocks.

November 12th 2005: A Richard's Pipit at Fuseta, seen by David and Jean Hammocks, this brings their total up to 128 for this trip!

February 14th 2006: Great and Little Bustards, between Castro Verde and Mertoal, just off the 123 near Penilhos and Joao Serra. Seen by Graham Watson.

March 12th 2006. Pair of Barn owls in the Nora well in the orange grove down the lane from Casa Rosa. Seen by Hanny while taking Fudge for a walk.

March 19th 2006.  The Hoopoes are again nesting on the bistro terrace, the male is bring food the the hen throughout the day.

March 24th 2006. The bee-eaters are back, early this year,  first spotted by David and Jean Hammocks who are back with us again. The bee-eaters, four of them were sitting in the top of an almond tree just in front of Casa Rosa. When the sun caught them they looked absolutely beautiful. 

April 13th 2006. Red-necked Nightjar is back, heard first thing this morning in the pine trees to the back of Casa Rosa.

May 4th 2006. Good sighting of a Golden Oriole in the fir trees at the back of Casa Rosa.

July 17th 2006. A last a good daylight sighting of the Red-necked Nightjar under a Carob tree on the donkey track , of course didn't have the camera with me!

August 21st 2006.  A Blue Rock Thrush. Seen on Sao Migeul, that's the big hill just north of Moncarapacho, the one with all the radio and TV masts on it, also a great place to see Bee-eaters they nest in a sand stone cliff just before the summit. The Blue Rock Thrust seen by Tony Duckett 

October 5th and 6th 2006: Rock Sparrow,  Osprey and Caspion Terns  at Castro Merin Reserve. Blue Rock Thrush at Fuzeta Crossroads. Tawney Pipit at Fuzeta Salt Pans. All seen by Graham and Judith Watson

October 9th 2006: Black-headed Weaver, Little Bittern and Glossy Ibis all at Quinta do Lago. All seen by Graham and Judith Watson. 

October 10th 2006. Little Bustard and Black Redstart near Castro Verde. Stone Curlew on N123 east of Castro Verde near Soa Marcos da Ataboeira in the direction of Mertola.   Short toed tree Creeper at Ludo. Blue Throat at Quinta do Lago near the lake. All seen by Casa Rosa newcomers Rachel and Rustom Patel. Welcome and thank you.

December 26th 2006. Griffin Vulture being pestered by a group of Azure winged Magpies at the Ria Formosa nature reserve. See and photographed by Bob Keating,

February 11th 2007 Audouin's Gull at Tavira salt pans. Seen by Rachel and Rustom Patel.

February 12th 2007: Lesser Kestrel near the village of San Marcos. Seen by Rachel and Rustom Patel.

April 4th 2007: The Bee-eaters have arrived at Casa Rosa. Flock of around 12 heard and then see. 

April 22nd 2007 The Red-necked Nightjar is back in the pine trees to the back of Casa Rosa making a lot of noise.

April 22nd 2007. Golden Oriole in the almond orchard at the back of Casa Rosa, seen by Trevor  and Ann Raven.

June 6th 2007. Turtle Dove at one of the bird-baths at Casa Rosa. Stayed quite a while until driven away by a gang of Collared Doves.

June 16th 2007. Turtle Dove, Little Owl, Bee-eaters  on the hill Barranco de Sao Miguel to the back of Moncarapacho. Woodchat Schick, Serin, Little Tern, Little Egret, Sardinian Warbler Black-winged Stilt, White Stork, Dunlin, Yellow-legged Gull.  Grey Heron, Little Grebe, Moorhen, Barn Swallow, Mallard, Coot. Cattle Egret and  Hoopoe  all seen at the Reserva Natural da Ria Formosa. By Rebecca and John Butler.

June 17th 2007. Red Rumped Swallow, Common Waxbill and Sardinian Warbler, Pallid Swift all at Casa Rosa. Green Woodpecker, Crested Lark , Red Legged Partridge and Mallard all at Park Conceicao just off the 125 east of Tavira. Blackcap Serin Azure-winged Magpie and House Martin at Casata Moinhas da Rocha. Little Tern, Crested Lark, Goldfinch, Greenfinch and Yellow Wagtail  all at Fuzeta Salt Pans.   

August 18th 2007. Short-toed Eagle. Flying over Casa Rosa then perching for around 45 minutes on the electric pylon 50 meters away. Spotted by Thomas Keens

August 28th & 29th 2007. Pied Flycatcher, Icterine Warbler, Bonelli's Warbler,  Alpine Swift, Common Kestrel, Montagu's Harrier, Blue Rock thrush. All see around Casa Rosa. by Tony Duckett.

September 10th 2007. Blue Throat at Fuzeta. Spotted by Jane and Barry Slight.

September 28th, 29th and 30th. 2007. Subalpine Warbler, Orpean Warbler, Common Whitethroat, Nightingale and Common Redstart all seen down the donkey track at Casa Rosa. Black Storke at Castro Marim. Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Short-toed Eagle and Black -winged Kite all seen at near Mertola in the Alentejo. Mediterranean Shearwater at Cabo St. Vicent. Black Terns and a Purple Heron at Pera Marshes. All seen by Graham and Judith Watson.

September 8th 2007: A small flock of Common Waxbills, eight or nine birds, playing in the trees around the grounds of Casa Rosa, the picture e was taken by Graham Watson.
