Birding report by David Hammocks and Miguel de Sousa of birds seen on 13th and 15th October 2005.

Starting from our base at Casa Rosa, which is  situated ideally for all the best birding sites of the Eastern Algarve, we paid visits to Quinta do Lago and Castro Marim, with a visit into Spain to Isla Christina and Punta Umbria. These can all be reached within one hour from Casa Rosa.

The following list of birds is intended to show what is around at this time of the year. The birds are listed in no particular order.

Birds seen at Casa Rosa: Hoopoe, Azure-Winged Magpie, House Sparrow, Collard Dove, Sardinian Warbler, Blackbird, Little Owl, Blackcap, Crested Lark.

Birds seen at Quinta do Lago:  Mallard, Gadwall, Pochard, Purple Swamp-hen, Glossy Ibis, Little Grebe, Chiffchaff, Great Crested Grebe, Redshank,Dunlin, Black winged Stilt, Avocet, Little Egret.

Birds seen at Castro Marim: Little Bustard x 4, Stone Curlew 12+, Red Legged Partridge 12+, Stonechat, Great Grey Shrike, Green Sandpiper, lapwing, Greater Flamingo 100+, White stork, Night Heron, Grey Heron.

Birds seen at Punta Umbria: Little Grebe, Red Necked Grebe, Black Necked Grebe, Robin, Melodious Warbler, Pochard 200+, Mallard 100+, Whit-winged Black Turn (10).
