April 3rd to 10th 2009

The accommodation at Casa Rosa was spotlessly clean and the room well presented. The surrounding gardens are beautiful and the hosts, Jan-Ketil and Kjersti friendly and welcoming. Our trip was primarily a birding holiday and we were not disappointed. In the garden were Azure Winged Magpies, Woodchat Shrikes, Hoopoes, Short Toed Treecreeper, Cuckoo and Bee-eaters just to start you off. We visited Castro Marim as well as the area around Faro airport and Petra Marsh, three wonderful coastal locations where an excellent range of wetland species were present. It is worth a trip North to the Alentejo, between Castro Verdie and Mertola (about 1 hour) where we had 300 Griffin Vultures, Black Vulture, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Many Montagues Harriers as well as Calandra Larks and Blackbellied Sandgrouse. A trip to The Coto Donana (2 hours) in Spain is also worthwhile as we had literally thousands of Pratincoles and 40 Whiskered Terns there to name just two. Using Casa Rosa as a base, we had 120 odd species in all and anyone interested in a birding holiday as well as a peaceful, relaxing environment would need to go a long way to better this location.
